A Review by Jeff KeislerNovember 19, 1996 |

| I've been able to give Beat Noir a better listen at work, words and all.
It's beautiful. A brilliant statement that hangs together as a "concept album." It surprised me by getting me visualizing the songs. It's also thinking man's music that will take a few listens to get word-plays and music-plays -- the type of album that critics like but that won't top the charts (i.e. Little Feat). Not just well-arranged, but well-crafted in the best sense of the word. I imagine the vocal track for Moontrain was recorded at the foot of your son's bed, around 8pm. The spoken vocals were not what I expected! Actually, it achieves the sound you want, but hearing the voice of someone I know well is just too weird. I can't help but wonder what the world is losing to administrative janitorialization at Emory. Glad I bought it. |
