From the web site for the Klezmer Conservatory Band (a really terrific group!):

For the past 25 years Bassist Jim Guttmann has worked in a range of venues from smokey dives to Carnegie Hall and in a variety of musical settings including blues and ethnic music bands, cabaret, symphony orchestras and jazz groups.

He joined the Klezmer Conservatory Band at its inception, and as a member of the band has performed and recorded with Itzhak Perlman and Joel Grey. He is a founding member of the Really Eclectic String Quartet and has worked with nationally renowned entertainers, jazz and folk musicians, including Eartha Kitt, Mark Murphy, Johnny Shines, Matt Glaser, Russ Barenberg and the Artie Shaw Band. He has performed with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and has played principal bass with the Harvard-Radcliff Orchestra and the Wellesley Symphony. Mr. Guttmann served as the musical director and bassist of the Tufts University Jazz Festival's Soul to Soul: A Tribute to Aretha Franklin.

Mr Guttmann began playing bass while completing his Master's degree in Mass Communications at Emerson College. He has studied performance with Edwin Barker and Dave Holland, harmony with Richard Cornell and techniques for improvisation with Charlie Banacos, and is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant to study the arco solo tradition in jazz bass playing.

In additon to performing, he has over fifteen years experience teaching performance on string and electric bass, basic music theory, and coaching student ensembles privately and at music schools and secondary schools in the New England area.

He serves as business manager of the Klezmer Conservatory Band and the President of the Klezmer Conservatory Foundation.
